Overcomer spirit!
One cannot spend much time with
the students of City Baptist School
without noticing their spirit. It is man-
ifested by their smiles in the hallways
and classrooms, by their spontaneous
singing on bus trips to school, by their
unselfish attitude toward their class-
mates, by their warm welcomes to
guests, by their love of the Best Years
members, and so on. We know this
spirit is a reflection of God's love which
our students have allowed to flow
through their lives. May it ever be so!

The 1996 OVERCOMER is dedicated to
Mr. Geoff Dana
O ne small pebble thrown into a body of
water causes a ripple effect covering great
distances. One bus, driven by a dedicated
driver, can cause an eternal ripple of effect
in the lives of the young riders on that bus.
Add to this driver a heart of love and godly
dedication, and then you will find Bro.
Geoff Dana, a City Baptist bus driver who
has given his life to minister to the indi-
vidual lives of our students.
Born in Bangkok. Thailand, to parents
working in government positions, Mr. Geoff
Dana has lived in several foreign countries.
At the age of fourteen, Mr. Dana moved to
Vienna, Virginia. In 1985. Mr. Dana was
given a tract from a Hyles-Anderson Col-
lege graduate. Mr. Dana read the tract and
accepted Christ as his personal Savior.
Through the influence of a friend, Mr.
Dana began attending church regularly. It
was through the influence of the assistant
pastor that Mr. Dana learned of Dr. Jack
Hyles and Hyles-Anderson College. Mr.
Dana moved to the Hammond area in 1 988
and began driving a bus for City Baptist
Schools. Mr. Dana has given a new defini-
tion to the occupation of bus driver.
Through consistent hard work, prayer,
and generosity, Mr. Dana has thrown out
his pebble of influence and touched the
lives of many students. Only Heaven will
reveal the effect of the man we call "Bro.
Geoff." With a bus as his throne, miles as
his challenge, and students as his life, we
are honored to dedicate our 1996 Over-
comer to Mr. Geoff Dana.

At 10 months of age. Bro. Geoff
becomes creative in his expression.
It has been my privilege for the past
nine years to know Geoff Dana as a
fellow employee and as a friend.
Brother Hyles has taught us that true
friends come from God. When Mr.
Dana came to City Baptist, he cer-
tainly was sent here by God.
For nine years Mr. Dana has risen at
3 o'clock each morning to get his bus
ready to pick up City Baptist students.
He contines to do it year after year.
His greatness will not be fully recog-
nized until we get to Heaven.
Mr. Dana has made a difference in
the lives of many "bus kids." His love
for them is very evident. I'm so happy
that the 1996 Overcomer is dedicated
to a very deserving Geoff Dana.

Godly Compassion
Dr. Jack F. Hyles was bom in Texas, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Athey Hyles. While he was
a child our country suffered the Great Depression, which placed many hardships on the Hyles’
family.
Dr. Hyles felt God’s hand on his life while still a boy, and he began preaching by the age of 19.
He has pastored the First Baptist Church of Hammond, the world’s largest Sunday school, for
nearly 37 years. During his tenure here, he has never forgotten the hardships of his childhood;
but rather, he has given his life to lift the load of others in need. City Baptist School is a result
of this godly compassion.

A Closer Look...
To the casual observer, the grade school might seem like just a bunch of
young children. But to the one who takes a closer look, it will be noted
that here are some clean-cut, excitable people who really want to please
the Lord with their lives. They are just embarking upon a long journey,
but a good start is vital for a truly successful journey. We at City Baptist
are trying to give our children this good start; to teach them from the
beginning the importance of living a clean, godly life. Let’s take a closer

Our Jog-A-Thon is a voluntary
fund-raiser to support our intra-
mural sports program. Students

students who reach a certain
level of support are rewarded

Thon itself is at a lovely park
where students enjoy good food
and time with their classmates

Mountains Higher in '95
l \ ith a mountain-climbing theme, this year’s candy sale was a huge success as students worked hard
selling candy to earn trips. Some of the special trips included Deep River Park, dry mountain *-<
sledding, a hayride/hot dog roast, Brookfield Zoo, bowling, Mt. Baldy Sand Dunes, down-river
canoeing, and Starved Rock State Park. The top six students enjoyed a four-day trip to the
Smoky Mountains in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

For one week of every school year, the hallways and class-
rooms of City Baptist take on the appearance of a laboratory
as students put up their Science Fair projects and displays.
